REM(A)INDERS

Hélène Delépine is in constant research. The real, seized during a stroll, is the source of fiction where improbable yet interrogative cohabitations develop. The place and the interactions of the elements of the real are displaced, slipped into the heart of a fiction, which the work thus composed carries. Disorientation of the real is without a doubt the driving force behind this”.
Christian Garcelon, director of the Saint-Flour Biennial of Contemporary Art, 2017

From a walk organized in Saint-Nazaire with the artist Alexis Judic to discover the architectural treasures of the city and its history, the artist photographed then drew some elements that she transcribed by the process of modeling. A meeting point between reality, perspectives and points of view, the sculptures form a synthesis where the city landscape embodies the desire for the imaginary. Reminders or remainders, reminders or remnants, REM(A)INDERS is a narrative that explores the origin, the essence of the images and what remains.

“My work is a construction game made of combination experiments that works by displacement and the use of sign and clue. It is part of a journey that explores points of view and scale relationships. It questions the permutation of the real and our imaginary by mixing architecture with the object, geometry with the organic, growth with decline. Between resistance and fragility, the rigid and the dissolute, I operate according to principles of duality and contradiction which translate a tension and allow to start a reflection or a questioning. I wish to instil a doubt in what is given to see and to reveal the fictional potential of the real, borrowing from it a repertoire of forms and images with a capacity to abstract themselves in order to elaborate a simple and essential formal vocabulary. I like the idea dear to Ettore Sottsass to transform the banal into timeless or possible mythical archetypes. Through the practice of clay modelling, I seek the potentialities to question and represent intermediate states that can contradict each other and thus open a breach to probe our multiple readings of reality. I like to think that this material, which is both timeless and intimately linked to the history of man, his cultures and his practices, can unceasingly test the link between what is built and what is disintegrated, between what belongs to the present and what belongs to the past, between what is and the projection that we have of the real, and thus form the synthesis of one and only one condition”.
