Every year, percussionists and drummers from all around the world offer you different ways to tap, scrub, creak, rattle and other sounds of the art of percussion.
For the last days of confinement, several artists meet to offer 24 hours of live internet interspersed with a 12-hour broadcast of archives.
Drum &Percussion Madness #8 is the time to fill up with rhythms and sounds, to explore this ancestral art that goes beyond borders and languages!

Chris Corsano (usa)
Chris Corsano (b. 1975, USA) is an upstate NY-based drummer who has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music since the late 1990’s. He began a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty in 1998.
A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop his solo music–a dynamic, spontaneously-composed amalgam of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussive instruments of his own making: e.g. bowed violin strings stretched across drum heads, modified reed instruments, and stockpiles of resonant metal.
Corsano’s dedication to collective improvisation has led to collaborations with many kindred spirits and his appearance on over 150 records and 1000 live performances.

Yérri-Gaspar Hummel (Fr)
Born in 1982, Yérri-Gaspar Hummel (aka Kaspår) is specialize in a musical practice focused on the notions of sound situation in space, the link between sound and culture, sound movement and multimedia approach through concerts, varied performances and installations. His sonic and visual work is manifested in several production media. He explores music from improvisation to writing inspired by objects and the rhythm of everyday sounds. In 2007 and 2012 he is national laureate of a European project for the youth and sets up the international project AMBITUS, focused on a sound recording using the binaural recording technique. In 2018 he wons the project « réinventer l’opéra » from the French national organisation « Réunion des Opéras de France » for his project OPENGROUND with the architects Jakob & MacFarlane.

Rodolphe Loubatière (Fr)
For some time now, Rodolphe Loubatière has been working on a fascinating solo piece of work that plunges into the heart of sound and its material, using an extremely minimalist device: an acoustic slash box and a plethora of objects. Beyond the visual aspect of his live performances (understanding how such sounds are generated), we quickly feel like simply letting go, closing our eyes, listening and being overwhelmed by the incredible and infinite richness of the sounds exposed/expressed. A goldsmith’s attention to detail and to how the generated sound must be projected with a “stereo set”, or even “multi-speaker set”, where one finds oneself surprised to realize that all this is done without any amplification or diffusion system whatsoever. Sound textures filling the space, moving masterfully within it, like a work of tape/cut-ups/electro-acoustics, or even at times completely electronic, and this always and “simply” from a “simple” unamplified snare drum. And when we begin to hear some sort of unrecorded human voices, and then, on the end, industrial-ferrous clashes swirling in the space around us, moments of grace of a masterly moving and/or shivering intensity are reached.

Created in 2012 in Nancy, LCB or Les Conférences Bunker is an improvised music duo consisting of drums, objects, drum machine, synthesizer and effects.
Inspired by Japanese experimental theatre, and the European noise scene, their music mixes very dense explosive moments with raw and fast percussive colours, with moments of tension and expectation. The sounds played blend and merge into a whole, where one loses the perception of “who plays what” for a homogeneous and opaque whole. A canvas is woven into sound materials that sometimes respond to each other, sometimes annihilate each other.
The musicians do not hesitate to stage themselves, through objects, voices, costumes, and wandering. Through several collaborations with dancers (Michiyasu Furutani, Møbius Karoline), LCB reveals a dynamic visual dimension. The overall aesthetic of this project goes beyond the traditional concert, reviving the idea of ritual, tribal, ancestral, and the idea of a theatre.

Lise-Lotte Norelius (Se)
Percussionist since 25 years, with a background in trad. african music, experimental rock, worldmusic and free improvisation. She played with various groups a.o. Bitter Funeral Beer Band and Anitas Livs where she during many years developed a personal sound with percussion and sampled sounds.
The wish to go further into electroacoustic music, grew during a project about acoustics 1996, where she composed her first 8-channelpiece.
LLN studied electroacoustic composition at Royal College in Stockholm 1998-2002 and is, since then, developing her work with live-electronics and realtime processing of various sound sources.
Her penchant for rhythmic structures, layers, sound character, and long lines characterize her music.
The last years she has composed music for tape, musicians and live-electronics, theater, poetry, sound/video works and dance performances.
She is performing as solo-artist and with different constallations, consisting of musicians, dancers/choreographers and intermedia artists, in the fields of eam, sound art, noise, free improvised electronica, dance and performance.
Lê Quan Ninh (Fr)
Classically trained, the percussionist Lê Quan Ninh has since the beginning of the 80s conducted a musical activity divided between interpretation of contemporary music and free improvisation. He was one of the founding members of the Hêlios Quartet, a percussion ensemble from 1986 to 2012. In 2006, together with cellist Martine Altenburger, he founded the ensemble]h[iatus, a contemporary music ensemble whose members are both performers and improvisers.
He is one of the artistic advisers of the Ryoanji Association and the festival Le Bruit de la Musique, which develop – mainly in Limousin but also beyond – a work of creation, awareness and transmission dedicated to contemporary musical creation.
As an improviser, he has devoted himself to several regular training sessions with artists such as Daunik Lazro, Michel Doneda, Beñat Achiary, Dominique Regef, Paul Rogers, Frédéric Blondy, Peter Kowald, …) and has met many others more occasionally.
Lê Quan Ninh also has a privileged relationship with dance.
He was one of the founding members of the association La Flibuste in Toulouse from 1988 to 2002, a collective of improvisers from all disciplines (music, dance, experimental film and video, performance, etc.) and participated for a few years in the Ouïe/Dire collective.
In 2010, he publishes Mômeludies Improviser librement – Abécédaire d’une expérience with a revised and expanded edition in 2014.
Peter Orins (Fr)

After experimenting with randomness and electronic transformation (see Empty Orchestras – 2014), Peter Orins returns this time with his only drum set, and some objects, bowls, wood, shells…
As an improviser, he is interested in sound textures, the ambiguity of timbres and their production, the saturation of sounds or the harmonics specific to each instrument: make it possible to hear both the “microscopic” noises of skins or metals rubbed, struck, prepared, at very low power, and the acoustic pressures felt at high volume.
His approach focuses on chance, on the uncontrolled via small accidents, acoustic interactions between objects, percussions, resonances and sympathies due to certain frequencies or vibrations. This results in a certain form of fragility, clumsiness or imprecision, not only integrated but also desired, which transcends errors into necessarily unexpected effects, into an unintentional discovery, which in turn establishes another relationship with time.
His practice, influenced in particular by his encounter with minimal music and composers such as Michael Pisaro, James Saunders or Anthony Pateras, led him to approach James Tenney’s piece “Having Never Written A Note For Percussion” (from the Postal Pieces, written in 1971), a piece that combines the musician’s various concerns with time, progression, dynamics and the richness of the timbres…
Z’EV (Electronic Drum interprété par Thenoiser) – (Usa/Fr)
In RHYTHMAJIK, Thenoiser radically reformulated the mystical tradition commonly known as the Qabalha. From an Astral/Cosmological focus, to an Earth-based paradigm, in harmony with the needs of our current time.It requires no knowledge of the Qabalha, nor does it assume or call for a prior knowledge of any of the traditional literatures.
Rhythmajik is not about music but spells out the use of rhythm and sound and proportion for Trance, Healing, etc. It features a unique Numerical Encyclopedia and two Numerical dictionaries comprising over 5000 beat patterns with their semantic meanings encompassing both healing and ritual vocabularies.
Phill Niblock / Katherine Liberovskaya / Julien Ottavi (Usa/Fr)
Katherine Liberovskaya is a video and media artist based in Montreal, Canada, and New York City. She has been working predominantly in experimental video since the late eighties. Over the years, she has produced many single-channel videos, video installation works and video performances which have been presented at a wide variety of artistic venues and events around the world. As of recent years her work – in single-channel and installation video as well as performance – mainly revolves around collaborations with new music composers/sound artists, notably Phill Niblock, Al Margolis/If,Bwana, Hitoshi Kojo, Zanana, Anne Wellmer, David First and David Watson. Since 2003 she is active in live video mixing exploring improvisation with numerous live new music/audio artists.
Phill Niblock (b. 1933, USA) is an artist whose fifty-year career spans minimalist and experimental music, film and photography. Since 1985, he has served as director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation for avant-garde music based in New York with a branch in Ghent, and curator of the foundation’s record label XI. Known for his thick, loud drones of music, Niblock’s signature sound is filled with microtones of instrumental timbres that generate many other tones in the performance space. In 2013, his diverse artistic career was the subject of a retrospective realised in partnership between Circuit (Contemporary Art Centre Lausanne) and Musée de l’Elysée. The following year Niblock was honoured with the prestigious Foundation for Contemporary Arts John Cage Award.
A mediactivist, artist-researcher, composer / musician, poet and tongues destroyer, experimental film maker and anarchitect, founder and member of Apo33, Julien Ottavi is involved in research and creative work, combining sound art, real-time video, new technologies and body performances. Since 1997, he develops a composition work using voice and its transformation through computer. Active developer of audio/visual programs with Puredata, he has also developed since many years DIY electronics (radio transmitters, oscillators, mixers, amplifiers, video transmitters…etc) in the perspective of knowledge sharing on technological development.

Morihide Sawada (Jp)
… was born in Japan.
Since 1980, started to play his own music.
Studied electrical engineering in university.
However, his first job was an editor of a music magazine that specializes in progressive rock.
After that, he was working as a sound engineer, and sometimes played drums with different bands.
In 2006, SAWADA played drums as a member of a psychedelic rock band.
Since that time, he sometimes plays in Europe.
Started solo performance “snare drum solo” since September 2011.
He already collaborated with many musicians.
Wang Beibei (Chn)
Genre-defying percussionist Beibei Wang is an acclaimed international virtuoso multi-percussionist, composer with both Chinese and British musical education background. Beibei has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the classical music world, receiving international praise for her projects. Her music spans many genres, ranging from classical, contemporary, experimental, traditional ,improvisation, electronic, jazz, pop. By exploring new possibilities and challenging assumptions from all fields, she and her collaborators have developed genre-defying projects, pushing boundaries, including Dance theater, Multimedia opera, Body & Sound live painting, Film installation, delighting audiences the world over.
Beibei is also an active world music researcher. She travels worldwide studying and collecting ethnic music ,including traditional percussion and dance ANHUI FLOWER-DRUM LANTERNS in China, Indian tabla, middle-east percussion, Irish Bodhran, Brazilian percussion, Japanese Taiko, Korean traditional percussion.
Beibei is a passionate composer and performs her own original composition in recitals and concerts across Europe.
Burkhard Beins (De)
Burkhard Beins, born 1964 in Lower Saxony, lives in Berlin since 1995. As a composer/performer working in the fields of experimental music and sound art he is known for his definitive use of percussion in combination with selected sound objects. Furthermore, he works with live-electronics/analog synthesizers and has conceived several sound installations.
Since the late 1980’s he is performing at internationally renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, America, Australia and Asia.
Alongside his solo work he is a member of the ensembles Polwechsel, Activity Center, The Sealed Knot, Perlonex, Trio Sowari, Sawt Out, Vertigo Transport, Tree, and Splitter Orchester and also works with composers/musicans such as Sven-Åke Johansson, Andrea Neumann, Keith Rowe, Axel Dörner, Chris Abrahams, John Tilbury, or Charlemagne Palestine.
Seijiro Murayama (Jp)
Percussionist, Seijiro Murayama has been working in France since 1999, after almost 20 years of musical career in the field of improvised music. His work is focused, in particular, on the collaboration between music and other artistic activities: dance (Catherine Diverrès), video (Olivier Gallon), paintings (François Bidault), photos (Purpose.fr), literature, philosophy (Jean-Luc Nancy, Ray Brassier), performance (Diego Chamy) etc. This does not prevent him from having many purely sound projects (with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Pascale Criton, Eric Cordier, Eric La Casa, Axel Dörner, Tim Blechmann, Seymour Wright, Toshimaru Nakamura, Toshiya Tsunoda). For him, improvisation is his major artistic concern, even if he does not always practice it in public. His approach is based on attention to space and place, to the energy of the audience and especially to the quality of silence at different levels (physical, social, ontological). He is currently deepening his reflections, notably on the question of idiomatic and non-idiomatic – “Idioms and Idiots” (with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Mattin, Ray Brassier 2009). In 2010-2012, he is the curator of the festival “Personal and Collective” in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is the 2016 laureate in residence at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto with Didier Aschour.
Tatsuya Nakatani (Usa/Jp)
Tatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde percussionist, composer, nd artist of sound. Active internationally since the 1990’s; Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively, performing over 150 concerts a year. His primary focus is his solo work and his large ensemble project, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. With his activity in the new music, improvisation and experimental music scenes, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Japan, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Nakatani creates his distinctive music centered around his adapted bowed gong, supported by an array of drums, cymbals, and singing bowls. In consort with his hand carved Kobo Bows, it is an instrument he has spent decades developing. Nakatani approaches his orchestral project (NGO) as an arrangement of formations of vibrations, incorporated in shimmering layers of silence and texture. Within this contemporary work, one can still recognize the dramatic pacing, formal elegance and space (ma) felt in traditional Japanese music.
Teresa Riemann (De)
Teresa Riemann moves in her various forms of expression between chanson, rock n’ roll and atonal new music, combining contradictory forms and creating new sounds. She loves the sometimes disturbing contrasts between lovely melodies and cruelly realistic lyrics, as well as the contrast between her solo piano program and the more noisy drum playing.
René Le Borgne (Fr)
Recognized and praised by the milieu, René Le borgne, Gold Medal and 1st interregional prize of Seine Saint Denis (Drums), works among others in collaboration with the theatre company “Les crieurs de Nuit”. Founder and artistic director of the ensemble ” Pagaille “, he is also artistic director of the vocal ensemble ” Piccolo “. This touch to everything goes from free rock to French chanson, from improvisation to musical theatre, from contemporary music to sound installations, from vibration to sound, from whispering to silence. He collaborates in many projects and artistic meetings combining this plurality. A true enchanter, he transports the audience with his astonishing sounds, a sound researcher at the service of music.
Bob Bellerue (Usa)
Bob Bellerue is a sound/video curator, electronic composer, experimental musician, and creative technician based in Brooklyn NY. Over the last 33 years he has been involved in presenting and creating a wide range of experimental and extreme sonic activities – noise art, experimental / abstract music, junk metal percussion ensembles, Balinese gamelan, sound scores for dance/ theater/ video/ performance art, and sound / video installations.
Jenny Pickett (Fr/Uk)
Jenny Pickett’s practice crosses: sculpture, sound, drawing, video, interactivity and performance. This plurality of mediums garner layers of meaning, she often explores her subject through the influences of sound upon the gaze and visa versa, altering both sonic and visual counterparts, asking the viewer rethink their encounter with the oeuvre. Pickett’s preoccupation lies at the point at which technology (new or ancient) becomes the landscape or the body by accumulating their prior states, our prior norms.
